What is Title IX?

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (20 U.S.C. § 1681) is an all-encompassing federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex of students and employees of educational institutions that receive federal financial assistance. Title IX reads:

No person in the United States, shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance…” Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and its implementing regulation at 34 C.F.R. Part 106 (Title IX). 

What is covered by Title IX?

In compliance with Title IX, North Hennepin Community College (and the MnSCU system) prohibits discrimination in all educational programs and activities on the basis of sex. Programs under Title IX at NHCC include, academic programs, admissions, recruitment, financial aid, employment. 

Title IX is frequently thought of as a law that applies to athletics programs, however, it is much broader than that. Title IX applies to all educational programs and activities at North Hennepin Community College.

Responsibilities of the Coordinator includes:

Monitoring and oversight of overall implementation of Title IX Compliance and the prevention of harassment and discrimination at the University, including coordination of training, education, communications, and administration of grievance procedures for faculty, staff, students and other members of the University community.
